Prior to joining the real estate industry, Doug Gillis had a successful career in yacht building and repair in Toronto. He sold his first business to C&C Yachts and when they met their demise in 1987, Doug re-acquired the business from receivers, Cooper & Lybrand. After restructuring the company, he sold it once again to an English consortium in October of 1989.
Doug’s love for skiing and cycling initially drew him to the Georgian Triangle area, and after 25 successful years in the marine industry, he made the decision to relocate to Collingwood. With his knowledge of marine construction and contracting, real estate sales were a natural progression. After so many years in the yacht business, he began to think that one of the greatest things about being involved with houses and property was the fact that they didn’t sink, explode, or end up adrift.
Since joining the real estate industry in 1991, Doug has been actively involved in approximately 1,200 sales and purchases (as of December 31, 2015), both residential and commercial, in Collingwood, Town of the Blue Mountains and the surrounding area. Since 1991 he has achieved a sales volume in excess of $403,000,000 (as of December 31, 2015).
Some of his most notable projects include:
- The acquisition of all the lands acquired for the Georgian Bay Club
- The marketing and selling of the Alta Subdivision
- The marketing and selling of Phase I and Phase II of Nipissing Ridge
- Assembling the 63 acre acquisition for Terrasan in Craigleith, over a period of 2 years
- Assisting in the acquisition of property for the Olde Towne project in the heart of Collingwood
- Facilitating the acquisition of property and negotiating a construction contract for Chartwell Reit
In this 4 season playground, a considerable portion of buyers are looking for a second residence. Doug has dedicated substantial time and energy to ensuring he understands this unique market. Due to his efforts, a large part of his business is working with sellers and buyers in the 2nd residence market.
As a seasoned veteran in handling commercial properties, Doug also remains very active in this aspect of real estate.
Doug has achieved a number of RE/MAX awards over his 20+ year career, including:
- Diamond Club 2015
- Chairman’s Club – 2002, 2011, 2013 and 2014*
- Platinum Club – 1999-2010
- 100% Club – 1994-1998
- Executive Club – 1993
- RE/MAX Hall of Fame Award

Doug’s latest sales achievement has been entry into the elite RE/MAX Diamond Club, an honour reserved for sales associates with annual commissions in excess of $1,000,000.00. *Jan-Nov 2014
My experience with Doug Gillis as my real estate agent in the sale of my home could not have been better. What’s more, I met the purchasers, and they told me that they felt the same way. I found Doug to be forthright, knowledgeable and a hard worker. He always delivered what he promised. I believe that Doug has everybody’s best interest in mind, which in the long term, makes for an excellent agent.
We really enjoyed having Doug as our buying agent because he quickly understood our family needs and wants in a Blue Mountain home. We always felt that he was honest with us about each home that he showed us. He wanted us to look, compare, think, wait, and find the perfect all season chalet…and we did! When that right home came on the market, he was there to make it all happen. Thanks Doug.
Thank you so much; you have done an outstanding job for us and we have enjoyed working with you every day throughout the entire process. You have done a great job. You said it would sell this summer and it did – in just about 2.5 months too – you did a terrific job marketing and selling our home. Thank you.
Please drop in anytime you are in Thornbury for lunch or just a little verandah visit.
With sincere appreciation,
